Winter storms, high tide and strong winds ...

09th January 2011

Dorset Landscape Photography : Winter storms at Hive Beach

This weekend saw one of the highest tides of the year which was accompanied by some reasonably strong onshore winds of force 6 and above. The result was some very dramatic weather.

I had gone down to see the sunrise as the forecast has promised broken cloud. However, the sky was covered in dark and gloomy clouds, and although there was a very small break for a couple of minutes, it was mostly a grey and overcast morning.

The water was pounding up the beach, breaking over the small banks by the car park, moving the small local fishing boats back out to sea, coming up into the lower car park area infront of the cafe, and hitting the cliffs with such force that the resulting waves and spray were as tall as the cliffs themselves.

The sea spray was getting everywhere, including all over the lens, so I apologise as a couple of the shots are a bit blurry. The spray was being caught by the winds, rising up and over the cliffs and forming a cloud of its own.

I tried a long exposure shot while I was there, and although the lens took a load of spray during the shot, it has a misty effect I quite liked.

I hope you enjoy the results.
